Holiday Gift Guide for Travel Families (2026)

Every year I get asked what to buy for families who travel. Here's my honest list — everything on it has been tested by our family of five across multiple international trips. Organized by who it's for.

I'm not listing random stuff I saw on Instagram. These are things we actually own, use, and have dragged through airports, train stations, and Airbnbs across Europe. If it didn't survive a summer with three kids, it didn't make the list.
For Toddlers & Young Kids (Ages 1–5)
- Toniebox — A screen-free audio player kids can use independently. Load it with stories and songs. Perfect for flights and quiet time in Airbnbs. Our youngest has used hers on every trip since she was two.
- Yoto Player Mini — Similar concept, card-based audio player. Great for car rides and bedtime. Some families swear by this one over the Toniebox — honestly, both are excellent.
- Sticker books and mess-free coloring — Melissa & Doug Water Wow are flight survival essentials. No mess, no cleanup, and they can do them over and over with a little water.
- Kids' backpack — Something small enough they can carry themselves. We like Skip Hop for the youngest. Giving them ownership of their own bag is a game changer at the airport.
- Munchkin 360 sippy cups — Leak-proof, durable, airport-friendly. We've had the same ones for three years and they still work perfectly.
For Kids Ages 6–12
- Kindle Paperwhite Kids — Unlimited books in a lightweight, waterproof device. We switched to these and never looked back. Each kid has their own loaded with books, and it weighs almost nothing in their backpack.
- Travel journal — A kid-friendly journal they can write and draw in during the trip. Makes great souvenirs. Our kids look back at these more than any photos we've taken.
- Card games — Uno, Spot It, and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza are our go-to travel games. They fit in a pocket and can entertain the whole family at a restaurant while you wait for food.
- Binoculars — For nature camps, hikes, and sightseeing. Kids love having their own pair. Ours have been used to spot everything from birds in Scotland to boats in Barcelona.
- Portable art kit — Colored pencils, small sketchbook, and a pencil case. Simple, lightweight, and keeps creative kids busy for hours.
For Teens
- AirPods or noise-canceling headphones — Non-negotiable for flights and hostels. If your teen doesn't have a pair yet, this is the gift.
- GoPro or action camera — Let them document their own adventure. Our oldest started making little travel videos and it completely changed how engaged he was on trips.
- Portable phone charger — Their phone is their camera, map, and connection to friends. Keep it charged. We've learned this the hard way more than once.
- A real travel backpack — Something that fits under airplane seats with compartments for tech. Teens want something that looks cool but actually functions — not a school backpack stuffed with chargers.
For Parents
- Nordace Siena Backpack — My daily travel backpack. Fits a laptop, water bottle, and still looks put together. I've carried this thing through 8 countries and it still looks brand new.
- Portable power bank — Anker makes the best ones. 20,000mAh minimum for a family. When you're charging five devices, you need serious capacity.
- Osea travel-size skincare set — TSA-friendly sizes of excellent products. Travel doesn't mean your skincare routine has to suffer.
- Bubs Naturals electrolyte packets — Toss in your water bottle for long travel days. Use code CBM20 for 20% off. I swear by these for jet lag recovery and hot summer days.
- Packing cubes — The unsung hero of family travel. Compression cubes changed our packing game completely. Each kid gets a color, and everything stays organized.
- eSIM card — Pre-loaded European data. No fumbling with physical SIM cards at the airport. Set it up before you leave and you're connected the moment you land.
For the Whole Family
- Flytographer gift card — Professional family photos in any city worldwide. We use them every summer. Honestly, these sessions have given us our favorite family photos of all time.
- Board games for travel — Magnetic chess, travel Scrabble, compact card games. Rainy evenings in an Airbnb are inevitable — be prepared.
- A great suitcase — We use one medium suitcase for the whole family. Quality matters when you're rolling it across cobblestones in Italy.
