Japan is one of the most exciting camp destinations I've come across — and one of the least expected. If your family is spending time in Asia or you're looking for something truly different, these three programs offer genuine adventure with English-speaking staff.

OWIS Osaka Summer Camp

A day camp in Osaka for ages 6–14, running July 14 to August 8, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. Activities rotate through performing arts, tech exploration, nature and science, and agriculture. Weekly themed excursions include trampoline parks, forests, water parks, farms, and interactive science centers. There's also rooftop pool swimming, creative workshops (tie-dye, pottery), and special guest performers. Led by international teachers.

Ages: 6–14 | Type: Day camp | Language: English | Season: July–August

Myoko English Explorers

A sleepaway camp in Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture, for ages 6–15 with bilingual staff. Activities include kayaking, paddleboarding, mountain biking, hiking, survival skills, farm tours, climbing gym, and movie nights. They run two tracks: a 5-day Adventure and Culture Camp for fluent/native English speakers focused on teamwork and cultural exploration, and an Outdoor English Immersion Camp with morning English lessons plus afternoon adventure activities.

Ages: 6–15 | Type: Sleepaway | Language: English (bilingual staff) | Season: June–August

Hokkaido Summer Camp

A unique 5-day hybrid program in Hokkaido for ages 6.5–13 — three days of day camp plus two nights of sleepaway. Locations span Niseko, seaside spots, forest campsites, and Lake Toya. Activities are adventure-heavy: river rafting, cycling, beach time and snorkeling, SUP, lake play, farm visits, and outdoor games. The survival skills component is standout — kids learn fire-building, shelter-making, tool use, and raft construction. There's also a forest challenge where kids build a civilization using bamboo and rope. Bilingual coaches lead everything.

Ages: 6.5–13 | Type: Day camp + sleepaway hybrid | Language: English (bilingual coaches) | Season: June–August

Why Japan Works

  • Unique experience. There is nothing else like a Japan camp summer. The culture, food, and landscape are unlike anything in Europe or the US.
  • Safety. Japan is one of the safest countries in the world for families.
  • English-friendly. These camps specifically cater to English-speaking families with bilingual or international staff.
  • Combine with travel. A camp week in Osaka or Hokkaido pairs perfectly with family travel to Tokyo, Kyoto, or the Japanese Alps.
